The AI Search Playbook

Google's AI Overviews now answer the question before anyone reaches your site. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini recommend brands without a single click. This is the manual for making the machines pick you. Five plays. No fluff. Steal them.

The one-sentence version

Search stopped being about ranking. It became about being the answer. Give the machines clean, provable, expert-backed content structured so they can lift it, and get your name mentioned everywhere they read. That is the whole game. Here is how you actually do it.

01

Win the AI Overview

The AI Overview is the Gemini-written box pinned above the blue links. It eats roughly half the screen and answers the query outright. Being quoted inside it is Google handing you a personal endorsement in front of millions. Most site owners have not adjusted yet, so the door is wide open. Winning it is the old featured-snippet game with sharper teeth: feed Google clean, factual, expert-backed content that the AI can lift in one clean bite.

First, the 10-minute pre-flight

If the foundations are broken, nothing else matters. The AI reads your mobile version, so before you optimise a single word, clear these four:

The 5-step play

Step 1 · Pick the right pages

Overviews swarm on informational queries: how-to guides, definitions, problem-solvers, step-by-steps and comparisons. They avoid opinion, news, promo and anything that dates fast. Do not boil the ocean. Grab 3 to 5 pages, work them, track, then repeat. A page qualifies if you can answer yes to all four:

Pro move: in Ahrefs, open Organic Keywords, filter for the AI Overview SERP feature plus "where target doesn't rank" to find the exact queries you rank for but are not cited in.

Step 2 · Structure it so a machine can lift it

Step 3 · Write answers the AI can steal

Open every section with the answer in the first sentence. Newspaper style: lead, then prove. Never write the wishy-washy "many experts disagree" hedge. Use this exact shape, drawn from analysing 300+ live Overviews:

DIRECT ANSWER (1 sentence): [State the answer plainly and confidently.]

KEY DETAILS (2 to 3 sentences): [Back it with a specific number, a source, or a concrete example. Stay in your brand voice. Keep it current.]

Want the fast route? Google the term, read the current Overview's opening, and rewrite that answer better and in your own voice with the same structure. You are reverse-engineering what Google already decided is correct.

Step 4 · Prove you are the expert (E-E-A-T)

Step 5 · Ship it and track it

Push each optimised page through Search Console URL Inspection, then Request Indexing. Track Overview presence in Ahrefs or Semrush, because Search Console will not show it. Indexing lands in 1 to 7 days, first movement in 2 to 4 weeks, stable results in 1 to 3 months. Keep the page fresh to hold the spot.

Do not

Optimise before the foundations are solid. Chase opinion or time-sensitive topics. Run multiple H1s. Bury the answer. Fake expertise, real E-E-A-T cannot be faked. Skip citations. Expect overnight wins.

02

Steal a rival's citation

This is the dirty little shortcut. Google mostly builds the Overview from text that already ranks on page one. So if you already rank in the top ten for a keyword but are not the one being quoted, you can slide your own reworded version of the answer onto your page and let Google swap you in. Roughly 60 seconds per keyword. Rinse and repeat.

Step 1 · Find the openings

In Search Console, open Search Results and turn on Average Position. Add a Position filter set to "smaller than 11" to surface every page-one query you own. Or in Ahrefs, filter organic keywords for the AI Overview feature where your page is not the source.

Step 2 · Confirm the target

Manually search each candidate. Make sure an Overview actually shows and that you are not already inside it. Pick one to start.

Step 3 · Copy, then rewrite

Copy the opening paragraph of the live Overview. Reword it: change the sentence structure, swap synonyms, keep the facts identical but the wording unique to you. Never paste it verbatim. Drop it into your ranking page wherever it fits naturally.

Step 4 · Reindex and check

Submit the page in Search Console URL Inspection, hit Request Indexing, wait about 24 hours, then re-search. Sometimes you take the top slot, sometimes the number-two source spot, sometimes nothing. It is 60 seconds. Play the odds at volume.

Reality check

This only works on keywords where you already rank page one. It does not work every time. And you must reword, never duplicate. Treat it as a fast top-up, not your whole strategy. Plays 1 and 3 are what build the moat.

03

Build brand signals AI trusts

Here is the part nobody wants to hear: the AI engines only recommend brands they already recognise. Google connects entities it understands to non-branded queries. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude do not rank pages live, they predict what is "true" from patterns repeated across their training data. If your brand lives only on your own website, you are invisible to all of them. The fix is to plant one consistent brand description across many trusted, relevant sites.

Your brand descriptor

Write one or two sentences and never reword them site to site. Consistency is the signal. Use this formula:

[Brand] is a [location, if it matters] [service type] specialising in [core offering] for [target audience].

Paste your URL plus that formula into ChatGPT for a first draft, then sharpen it. Publish the identical line on your homepage, About page, every social profile, Google Business Profile, directories and review platforms.

The 5-step build

The compounding timeline

Month 1: first signals. Month 6: recognised as a distinct entity, the AIs grasp what you do. Month 12: regular AI recommendations and SERP presence. Month 18: a real moat competitors cannot cheaply copy. Google entity results usually start showing within 2 to 3 months of consistent placement.

Do not

Let your brand exist only on your own site. Reword the descriptor everywhere. Chase only Forbes-tier names when a relevant DR-35 blog beats a huge irrelevant one. Use vague positioning like "we help businesses grow." Skip measurement. Expect it fast. This is a long game that pays forever.

This is literally what the Backlink VaultThe ArmoryThe Edge exists for: connect straight to relevant blog owners, place guest posts and link inserts, and skip the 3x to 5x middleman markup. Play 3 is the Vault's whole reason to exist.

04

Grade yourself like Google

Google reportedly builds its algorithm around the same three standards its human quality raters use: the Quality Rater Guidelines, E-E-A-T, and YMYL. That 180-page rater handbook was last refreshed in January 2025. You can grade your own page against it before you publish and catch the demotions before they happen. The trick: feed the guidelines plus a rater prompt to an AI and make it score you out of 100.

E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust. Is the content deep and accurate, and is the author actually qualified to write it?

YMYL

Your Money or Your Life. Finance, health, safety, legal, wellbeing. Held to a far higher bar. Prove accuracy and authority or it will not rank.

Rater Guidelines

The gold standard raters use to judge quality. Their feedback reportedly trains the algorithm itself.

Self-audit like a rater

Why this works

In one head-to-head on the same thin legal guest post, one AI waved it through at 78 out of 100 while a stricter one correctly flagged it at 62 and marked its YMYL standard as below par. Strong pages score high: a well-sourced stress-management article hit 94 on E-E-A-T. The point is simple, if the machine can grade you, grade yourself first and fix the gaps in priority order.

05

Use AI without getting torched

Everyone is pumping out AI content. Here is the uncomfortable data. In a study across 14 AI writing tools and 11 detectors, not one AI tool beat detection. Originality.ai flagged AI text at a 99.94% average. The logic is brutal and simple: if a machine wrote it, a machine can spot it. And detection is improving faster than generation. The gap is widening in Google's favour, not yours.

Use AI for

  • ▸ Research and analysis
  • ▸ Keyword and SERP work
  • ▸ Outlines and ideation
  • ▸ Optimisation and editing passes
  • ▸ Coding and data crunching

Do not use AI for

  • ▸ Final published prose, on autopilot
  • ▸ Anything YMYL: medical, legal, money
  • ▸ "Humanizer" tools to dodge detection, the best detectors already catch them
  • ▸ Client sites without telling the client
  • ▸ Believing vendor "passes AI detection" claims

The real risk

It is not that AI content can never rank today. It is that you cannot predict when Google corrects. The March 2024 core and spam update wiped out AI-heavy sites and many never came back. Content that passes today can be flagged retroactively as detection improves. Run your work through a strong detector before publishing to see what Google sees. Then make it genuinely human where it counts. AI is your co-pilot, not your ghostwriter.

TL;DR

The 10-minute battle card

No time? This is the whole manual on one screen. Screenshot it. Pin it.

01

Win the Overview. Fix mobile and speed first. Pick informational pages. One H1, sub-100-word answer up top, short sentences. Answer then prove. Show real E-E-A-T. Reindex.

02

Steal a citation. Find page-one keywords you rank for but are not cited in. Reword the live Overview answer onto your page. Reindex. Check in 24 hours.

03

Build brand signals. One consistent brand descriptor everywhere. 5 to 10 relevant placements a month. Get mentioned where the AIs read. Compound for months.

04

Grade yourself. Score your page against E-E-A-T, YMYL and the rater guidelines before you publish. Fix the gaps in priority order.

05

Handle AI content. Use it for research and editing, not final prose. Never on YMYL. Humanizers do not work. Keep it genuinely human where it matters.

Straight answers

What is an AI Overview?+

It is the AI-written answer box Google pins above the normal results, generated by Gemini from content that already ranks. It cites a handful of sources. Getting quoted in it puts your brand in front of millions with a Google stamp of approval.

How do I get cited in AI Overviews?+

Nail your technical foundations, target informational queries, structure the page cleanly with one H1 and a sub-100-word answer up top, lead every section with a direct answer, prove genuine expertise, then request indexing. That is Play 1 in full above.

Do backlinks still matter for AI search?+

More than ever, just indirectly. AI engines recommend brands they recognise, and recognition is built by consistent mentions and links across trusted, relevant sites. That is Play 3. No brand signals, no recommendations.

Will Google penalise AI-written content?+

It can, and it has. AI text is easily detected and Google has wiped out AI-heavy sites in past updates. Use AI for research and editing, keep final published content genuinely human, and never touch YMYL topics with autopilot AI.

How long until this works?+

Overview optimisation shows first movement in 2 to 4 weeks, stable results in 1 to 3 months. Brand signals start appearing in 2 to 3 months and compound hard from month 6 onward. The steal play can land in about 24 hours.

It's not the battle.
It's the f*cking war.
We are the answer.
