SEO & AI Search Statistics 2026
Compiled by David Sessford · 23 June 2026 · updated monthly Strike first. Strike hard. No mercy.
The short version: in 2026 search is no longer a tidy list of ten blue links. AI Overviews now appear on roughly a quarter of US Google searches, more than two-thirds of searches end without a single click, and ranking #1 is worth far fewer clicks than it was two years ago. At the same time, classic fundamentals. Backlinks, top-10 rankings, local intent. Still decide who the AI quotes in the first place. This page pulls together the numbers that prove it, every one linked to its original source so you can verify and cite them yourself.
It's a living reference. We update it monthly as new studies land, and we only include figures we can attribute to a named third-party study. Where a number is shaky or unverifiable, we leave it out. See the Sources & Methodology note at the bottom for the full list and our rules.

AI search & AI Overviews
AI Overviews. Google's generated answer box. Are now the single biggest force reshaping organic search. They appear most on questions and least on shopping queries, and where they show up, they quietly absorb the clicks that used to flow to position one. The flip side: get cited inside the answer and you win.
| Stat | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 25.8% | of US Google searches displayed an AI Overview in Q1 2026 (Conductor's 21.9M-query benchmark put it at 25.11%). | Semrush |
| 39.4% | of informational queries trigger an AI Overview. By far the most affected intent. | Semrush |
| ~4% | of e-commerce / transactional queries trigger an AI Overview. Shopping pages stay largely protected. | ALM Corp |
| 2.5B | monthly users now see AI Overviews globally (as reported around Google I/O 2026). | TechCrunch |
| 1B+ | monthly users on Google AI Mode within a year of its I/O 2025 launch; queries roughly doubling each quarter. | SEJ |
| +35% | more organic clicks for brands cited in an AI Overview vs non-cited competitors (Seer's 42-org, 25.1M-impression study). | Seer Interactive |
| 92.4% | of AI Overviews cite at least one domain already ranking in the top-10 organic results. Classic SEO still feeds the answer. | Quattr |
The takeaway: AI Overviews don't replace ranking. They sit on top of it. The way to appear inside the answer is still to earn a top-10 organic spot and a clear, quotable page. That's the exact thinking behind our AEO playbook.
Click-through, zero-click & rankings
If AI Overviews are the cause, collapsing click-through is the effect. More than two-thirds of searches now resolve without a click, and the value of a #1 ranking depends entirely on whether an AI Overview is sitting above it.
| Stat | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 68.0% | of US Google searches ended without a click in Jan. Apr 2026, up from ~60.5% in 2024. | SparkToro |
| ~28.5% → ~11.2% | top organic result CTR roughly halves (≈60% drop) when an AI Overview is present. | Seer Interactive |
| ~58% | reduction in CTR for top-ranking pages where an AI Overview appears, across 300k keywords. | Ahrefs |
| 27.6% | average position-1 organic CTR in 2026. Down from ~39.8% before AI Overviews became common. | First Page Sage |
| ~0.34% | of searches went to Google AI Mode (Jan. Apr 2026). For now, AI Overviews, not AI Mode, drive the click loss. | Search Engine Land |
Ranking #1 still matters. But in 2026 the prize for #1 is being the source the AI quotes, not just the link people click.
Google algorithm updates in 2026
2026 has been a volatile year for rankings. Google confirmed a spam update and two broad core updates in the first half alone, and the March core update was one of the most disruptive on record.
| Update | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Mar 2026 Spam | Spam update rolled out 21-24 March and completed in under a day. The year's first confirmed core/spam pair. | Search Engine Land |
| ~79.5% | of top-3 URLs changed position during the March 2026 Core Update. More volatile than December 2025. | Search Engine Land |
| ~24.1% | of pages ranking in the top-10 fell out of the top-100 entirely after the March 2026 Core Update. | SE Ranking |
| 12 days | rollout length of the March 2026 Core Update (27 March. 8 April), the first broad core update of the year. | Search Engine Land |
| May 2026 Core | Second core update of 2026 began rolling out 21 May, taking roughly two weeks to complete. | SEJ |

Link building & authority
Despite all the AI noise, links and authority remain the strongest signal of who gets ranked. And therefore who gets cited in the answer box. The numbers haven't budged much, which is exactly why they're worth knowing.
| Stat | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 3.8× | the #1 result has, on average, 3.8× more backlinks than positions 2-10. | Backlinko |
| 66.3% | of pages have zero backlinks pointing to them. Most never earn meaningful traffic. | Ahrefs |
| ~1 in 20 | pages with no backlinks gets any organic search traffic at all. And usually under 300 visits/month. | Search Engine Land |
| Highest | referring-domain count remains the single highest-correlating ranking factor in Ahrefs' analyses. | Rankability |
Translation: a quotable page with no authority behind it rarely makes the top-10, and if it's not in the top-10 it's almost never in the AI Overview. That's the whole reason we built the Backlink VaultThe ArmoryThe Edge.
Local & mobile search
Local search is where intent is highest and AI disruption is lowest. "near me" queries still send people to real businesses, fast. If you serve a local market, these are the numbers that pay the bills.
| Stat | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 46% | of all Google searches have local intent. | BizIQ |
| 76% | of people who search for something nearby visit a related business within 24 hours. | SEOProfy |
| ~88% | of "near me" searches happen on a mobile device. | Digital Applied |
| 63.8% | of all web traffic now comes from mobile, reinforcing local + mobile intent. | theStacc |

Sources & methodology
These figures are aggregated from cited third-party studies. They are not The KillerEdge's own first-party data. Each statistic links to its original source above and in the list below. We include only numbers we can attribute to a named, published study; where a figure is uncertain, contested or unverifiable, we leave it out. Definitions and measurement windows vary between studies (for example, "zero-click" and "CTR" are measured differently across SparkToro, Ahrefs, Seer and Semrush), so treat these as directional benchmarks rather than precise constants Last updated: 23 June 2026.
